An opposition is a 180° angle between two planets — they sit on opposite sides of the chart, looking at each other across the wheel. Oppositions are about polarity: two parts of you that pull in opposite directions, often projected onto other people until you learn to integrate them yourself.

Oppositions are tricky and powerful. Two planets opposing each other across the chart represent two opposing values, drives, or needs in you — and your task is to find the middle path, the integration where both can live.

A Venus-Mars opposition is the classic relationship axis: love (Venus) on one side, desire (Mars) on the other. Natives often experience this as a tension between wanting closeness and wanting independence, between sweetness and intensity. They may project one side onto partners — falling for people who embody the side they haven't owned in themselves.

A Sun-Moon opposition (born near a full moon) is often felt as a lifelong negotiation between inner emotional needs (Moon) and outer identity (Sun). You can feel pulled in two directions almost daily.

Oppositions teach through other people. You'll attract partners, friends, and adversaries who embody the opposite end of the polarity, and the relationships will press you to develop the side of yourself you've been avoiding. The mature opposition is two planets in conscious dialogue — you've integrated the polarity instead of bouncing between extremes.

Oppositions involve signs in the same modality but opposite elements (fire-air or earth-water). The signs aren't enemies; they're complementary. The opposition is asking for both, not either-or.

Example pairings

In real charts

A opposition works differently depending on which two planets are involved. Here are a few illustrative pairings:

  • Sun opposition Moon inner needs vs. outer identity — full-moon birth, lifelong integration
  • Venus opposition Mars love vs. desire — relationships full of polarity and projection
  • Mercury opposition Neptune logic vs. intuition — confusing yet creative thinker, easily misled
  • Sun opposition Pluto identity vs. power — major transformations through other people
