Mars
Your drive — how you take action, what makes you angry, and what you fight for.
See Mars in my chart →Mars is the planet of action and drive. It describes how you assert yourself, how you fight, what makes you angry, and what you'd defend. Mars also governs sexual energy and physical vitality. In a natal chart, Mars is where the will lives — the part of you that wants something and goes after it.
Mars's sign describes your action style. Mars in Aries is direct, fast, and competitive; Mars in Taurus is slow but unstoppable; Mars in Gemini fights with words and ideas; Mars in Cancer fights to protect; Mars in Leo fights publicly and proudly; and so on. Mars in its home signs (Aries, traditionally Scorpio) is most clearly itself — assertive, willful, sexually charged.
In a chart, Mars's house placement shows where you most assert yourself and where you're most likely to fight. Mars in the 1st makes you visibly assertive; Mars in the 10th, ambitious in career; Mars in the 7th, conflict-prone in partnership; Mars in the 8th, intense around money, sex, or shared resources.
Mars's aspects shape its expression. Mars-Sun gives strong drive and confidence. Mars-Moon makes feelings and action fused (sometimes volatile). Mars-Saturn slows Mars down and frustrates it (which can produce great endurance once worked through). Mars-Pluto gives deep, transformative drive — can be ruthless when out of balance.
Mars also describes anger style. Some Mars placements suppress and explode; others express anger directly and often. Knowing your Mars helps you work with your anger instead of being run by it. And Mars rules the libido — sexual style, what turns you on, what you want from intimacy at the level of physical desire.
Mars retrograde
RetrogradeMars goes retrograde about every 25-26 months for around 70 days. Natally, Mars retrograde often means a complicated relationship with anger and assertion — you may have learned early to suppress anger, to fight indirectly, or to channel drive inward (into work, art, or self) rather than outward. The energy is still there; it just runs through different channels. Many Mars-retrograde natives are formidable in long-term, sustained efforts.
