The Moon is the most personal point in a natal chart after the Sun. It governs your emotional life, your instincts, your need for safety and comfort. While the Sun is the part of you that's growing toward who you'll become, the Moon is what you already know — your default emotional language, your unconscious responses, the way you regulate yourself when no one's watching.

Your Moon sign describes how you feel and what you need to feel safe. It's the lunar weather of your inner life — the way you process emotion, the things that comfort you, the ways you need to be cared for. People with Moon in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) need movement, warmth, and expression to regulate; Moon in earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) need ritual, security, and embodiment; Moon in air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) need conversation and ideas; Moon in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) need intimacy and emotional depth.

The Moon's house placement tells you where in life your emotional life is most active. Moon in the 4th feels things most around home and family; Moon in the 10th around career and public image; Moon in the 7th around partnership.

A well-supported Moon (good aspects, ideally to Sun and Venus) suggests emotional security and self-regulation. A challenged Moon (hard aspects to Saturn, Mars, or Pluto) often means a more turbulent inner life — and the work of learning to give yourself the safety others didn't.

The Moon also describes how you give and receive nurture, what your "home" feels like, and the part of you that doesn't change with the year.

Moon retrograde

Retrograde

The Moon is never retrograde. As one of the two luminaries, it's always considered direct from Earth's perspective. Its phases (new, full, waxing, waning) matter astrologically, but it doesn't have retrograde periods.
