Mercury
How you think, learn, communicate, and process information.
See Mercury in my chart →Mercury is the planet of mind and communication. It governs how you think, how you talk, how you learn, how you write. In a natal chart, Mercury describes the speed and texture of your thought, the kind of conversations that energise you, and the way you take in new information. Mercury is never far from the Sun — it stays within about 28° of it — so it's always related to your core identity.
Mercury's sign describes the style of your thinking. Mercury in fire signs is quick, intuitive, and bold; Mercury in earth signs is methodical, practical, and concrete; Mercury in air signs is abstract, fluent, and connection-making; Mercury in water signs is intuitive, image-rich, and slower to put into words. Mercury in its home signs (Gemini and Virgo) is at its most articulate — the natural communicator and the natural analyst, respectively.
The house placement of Mercury tells you where you most express your mental energy. Mercury in the 3rd (its natural house) emphasises siblings, neighbourhood, daily communication; Mercury in the 9th, philosophy, travel, and big-picture thinking; Mercury in the 10th, career and public communication.
Mercury's aspects shape its character. Mercury-Sun close (which is most charts) makes thinking inseparable from identity. Mercury-Saturn slows it down and adds discipline. Mercury-Uranus adds genius-level originality and electricity. Mercury-Neptune adds intuition and possible confusion in equal measure.
Mercury also rules the small daily mind — text messages, errands, paperwork, schedules. When Mercury is well-placed, these run smoothly; when it's challenged, you're the person whose phone keeps dying.
Mercury retrograde
RetrogradeMercury goes retrograde 3-4 times per year for about three weeks at a time. In your natal chart, having Mercury retrograde means your thinking style is more reflective, more inward, and often more original than people who think out loud. You think first and speak second. You're often a writer or someone who works things out on paper. The popular fear of Mercury retrograde transits applies to the periods when Mercury appears to move backward in the sky for everyone — not to having Mercury retrograde in your natal chart, which is just a different kind of mind.
