Neptune
Where you dissolve into something larger — imagination, mysticism, art, illusion.
See Neptune in my chart →Neptune is the planet of dissolution, imagination, and the collective unconscious. Where Saturn builds boundaries and Uranus breaks them, Neptune dissolves them entirely. In a natal chart, Neptune shows where you're permeable to something larger than yourself — where you imagine, dream, idealise, and sometimes deceive (yourself and others). Neptune stays in each sign for about 14 years, so its sign is generational; its house and aspects are personal.
Neptune's house placement shows where dissolution operates in your life. Neptune in the 1st softens self-image and makes identity fluid (and sometimes hard for you to pin down). Neptune in the 7th idealises partners and partnerships (with the risk of seeing what you want to see rather than what's there). Neptune in the 10th brings creative or spiritually-tinged careers but can also bring confusion about direction. Neptune in the 12th — its natural house — deepens spiritual sensitivity and unconscious access.
Neptune's aspects to personal planets are where the imagination + illusion really show. Neptune-Sun makes for a dreamy or spiritual identity, often artistic, sometimes self-deceiving. Neptune-Moon adds emotional psychic absorption. Neptune-Mercury makes thinking image-based and intuitive (and sometimes imprecise). Neptune-Venus is the romantic-idealist signature — beautiful love, easy to fall into illusion.
Neptune is the planet of art, music, film, drugs, dreams, mysticism, and addiction — anything that dissolves the ordinary boundaries of self. Used well, it produces artists, healers, and spiritual practitioners. Used poorly, it produces escapism, denial, and victim-savior dynamics.
The growth work with Neptune is discernment: learning to distinguish between genuine intuition and projection, between transcendent insight and wishful thinking.
Neptune retrograde
RetrogradeNeptune is retrograde for about five months of each year — similar to Uranus, this is a high percentage. Natally, Neptune retrograde tends to internalise the Neptunian energy: spiritual longing, imagination, and intuition as inner experience rather than outer expression. Neptune-retrograde natives often have rich dream lives and intuitive depth, but may need to consciously bring those gifts into the world rather than waiting for external invitation.
