Sun

The Sun is the most important point in a natal chart. It represents your conscious self, the part of you that's most clearly "you." When people ask "what's your sign?" they mean your Sun sign — and they're not wrong to focus on it. The Sun is the gravitational centre of the chart, just as it is of the solar system.

Your Sun sign describes your core identity — the qualities you're growing into across a lifetime, the energy that feels most "you" when you're at your best. It's not the same as your personality (which is shaped by Moon, Rising, and other factors), but it's the deepest layer underneath the personality. The Sun is where your will lives, where your sense of "I" is rooted, and where you most need to shine.

The Sun's position in your chart by sign tells you the flavour of your essential self — fiery and direct (Aries Sun), steady and sensual (Taurus Sun), curious and verbal (Gemini Sun), and so on. Its position by house tells you the area of life where you'll most express that essential self — the 1st house emphasises identity and presence; the 10th, career and reputation; the 4th, home and family; the 7th, partnership.

A strong Sun (well-aspected, in its own sign or exalted, in a prominent house) suggests someone with clear self-direction and vital energy. A challenged Sun (under heavy aspects, in fall or detriment) often means a longer search for identity — but the search itself becomes the gift.
