Why the rising sign changes everything else

What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. It sets the first house of your chart and describes the face you show before anyone knows you — your reflexes in new rooms, your physical presence, the style people describe you with after one meeting.
Why do I need my exact birth time?
The whole zodiac rises over the horizon once every 24 hours, so a new sign ascends roughly every two hours. A birth time that is off by thirty minutes can move the ascendant by ten or fifteen degrees, and an error of an hour or two can change the sign entirely. Birth certificates, hospital records, or a parent’s memory are the usual sources.
Is the rising sign the same as the sun sign?
No. The sun sign depends only on the date. The rising sign depends on date, time, and location — two people born on the same day in different cities, or the same city six hours apart, will have different ascendants. That is why it is the ingredient that makes a birth chart yours rather than everyone’s who shares your birthday.
What if I don’t know my birth time at all?
Then the rising sign genuinely cannot be computed, and any calculator that gives you one without a time is guessing. You can still get your sun and moon signs, all your planetary placements, and the aspects between them — the full birth chart works with a “time unknown” option and simply leaves the houses out.
