Pluto
Where deep transformation happens — what dies in you, what gets reborn, where you face power.
See Pluto in my chart →Pluto is the planet of transformation, death and rebirth, power, and the underworld. Reclassified as a "dwarf planet" by astronomers in 2006, Pluto retains full astrological weight — and many astrologers would argue more weight than any other outer planet. In a natal chart, Pluto shows where you'll face deep transformation across a lifetime — areas where things must die for new life to emerge. Pluto stays in each sign for between 12 and 30 years, so its sign is generational; its house and aspects are personal.
Pluto's house placement shows where transformation hits hardest in your life. Pluto in the 1st makes for someone whose very identity transforms multiple times — often through difficult initiations. Pluto in the 7th, transformation through partnership, often intense or destructive-then-rebuilding relationships. Pluto in the 8th (its natural house) deepens themes of shared resources, intimacy, death, and what's hidden. Pluto in the 10th often means a public role that involves power and controversy.
Pluto's aspects to personal planets are where the intensity really shows. Pluto-Sun: identity faces transformation, often through power dynamics or near-death experiences (literal or metaphorical). Pluto-Moon: emotional life undergoes deep changes, often around mother or family of origin. Pluto-Venus: love is transformative, sometimes obsessive, always intense. Pluto-Mars: ruthless drive when out of balance, formidable strategic capacity when integrated.
Pluto's lessons are slow and unavoidable. It works through what can't be controlled — illness, death, loss of power, betrayal, deep psychological excavation. The gift on the other side is genuine power — not power-over-others (which is Pluto's shadow) but power-with-self, the capacity to face what most people refuse to look at.
The shadow of Pluto is power abuse, manipulation, obsession, and the refusal to let go.
Pluto retrograde
RetrogradePluto is retrograde for about five months of each year. Natally, Pluto retrograde tends to internalise the Plutonian energy: transformation as inner work rather than outer crisis. Pluto-retrograde natives often have deep psychological insight and capacity for self-excavation, but may need to consciously address shadow material that others might face through external events.
