Sagittarius–Capricorn cusp: which are you?
Astrology writers call it the Cusp of Prophecy. In the sky there is no overlap: the Sun leaves Sagittarius and enters Capricorn at one precise minute, and that minute moves by up to a day depending on the year. Find your birth year below, convert your birth time to UTC, and you're one sign or the other. In 2026 the crossing is on December 21 at 20:50 UTC.

The Cusp of Prophecy: Sagittarius–Capricorn traits
What cusp lore describes for people born in the days around the crossing. Your Sun is still in one sign; the blend usually comes from Mercury, Venus, the Moon or the rising sign sitting in the other one, which your chart can confirm.
Personality
Sagittarius looks toward the horizon and Capricorn looks toward the summit, and the tradition calls their meeting the Cusp of Prophecy. Born at the December solstice, these people tend to be visionary and grounded at once: big ideas with a plan attached. They're often serious underneath a sociable surface, with strong intuitions about where things are heading and the discipline to prepare for it. They value independence and they value reputation.
In love
Loyal but slow to open up, they bring to relationships a sense of humour that hides a fair amount of reserve. They want a partner who shares their long-term goals and doesn't need constant reassurance. The Sagittarius side wants adventure and honesty; the Capricorn side wants commitment and stability. They show love by building a future and by keeping promises, not by talking about feelings, which partners may need to learn to read.
At work
Work suits them when it has vision and structure: strategy, leadership, law, academia, publishing, international business, planning, founding institutions. They see further ahead than most and can turn a big idea into steps. They like authority and freedom in equal measure, which makes self-employment or senior roles appealing. They're frustrated by short-term thinking and by bosses who don't earn their respect.
The challenge
Prophecy can become pessimism, or certainty. They can be hard on themselves and aloof with others, and they may retreat into solitary work when they feel misunderstood. The Sagittarius side's bluntness plus the Capricorn side's severity can make them seem colder than they are. What helps is sharing uncertainty, letting others in on the vision early, and making room for play.
Why the date moves
The Sun takes 365 days, 6 hours and about 9 minutes to return to the same ecliptic degree, so each crossing lands roughly 5 hours 49 minutes later than the year before — until a leap day pulls it back a full day. Over a four-year cycle the crossing drifts about 45 minutes earlier, which is why the Sagittarius–Capricorn boundary sits on December 21 or 22 depending on the year rather than on one fixed date. Horoscope columns print a fixed date; the sky doesn't keep one.

What are the Sagittarius–Capricorn cusp dates?
Across 1980–2030 the Sun left Sagittarius and entered Capricorn on December 21 (32 of 51 years), December 22 (19 of 51 years). The exact instant is listed for every year in the table above.
Am I Sagittarius or Capricorn if I was born on the cusp?
One or the other, never both. Find your birth year in the table, convert your birth time to UTC, and compare: before the crossing you are Sagittarius, after it Capricorn. If you don't know your birth time, the free chart calculator computes it from date, time and place and settles it in a minute.
Why is the Sagittarius–Capricorn cusp called the Cusp of Prophecy?
The twelve cusp names come from Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers' The Secret Language of Birthdays (1994), which treats the week around each crossing as its own period with its own character. The Cusp of Prophecy is the name that book gave to the days where Sagittarius turns into Capricorn, and astrology writers have used it ever since.
Is being born on a cusp special?
In the chart your Sun sits at one degree of exactly one sign, so you are never "both". What cusp lore describes is still worth reading: someone born within a few days of the crossing often has Mercury or Venus (which stay close to the Sun) in the neighbouring sign, or the Moon or rising there, and those placements do much of the blending people attribute to the cusp. Your full chart shows which ones you have.
