A plain answer

What does my birth chart say about me?

A birth chart says five kinds of things about you: your core identity, your emotional needs, the way you come across, how you think, love and act, and where your inner tensions and talents lie. Each comes from a different part of the chart, and the chart itself is free to compute.

1. Who you are: the Sun

Your Sun sign is the one you already know, and it is the chart’s statement of core identity: what you are trying to become, what you are proud of, where your vitality comes from. It is one placement out of eleven, which is why a Sun-sign description fits you loosely. The Sun’s house says where in life that identity is worked out; a twelfth-house Sun does its real work in private, a tenth-house Sun in public.

2. What you need: the Moon

The Moon is what you need in order to feel safe, what you do when nobody is watching, how you were comforted as a child and how you comfort yourself now. People with the same Sun and different Moons are recognisably different people. The Moon’s sign is the style of need; its house is where the need shows up; its aspects say how easily it is met. Every Sun and Moon combination has its own page here.

3. How you come across: the rising sign

The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was on the eastern horizon at your birth. It is the way you enter a room, the first impression, the manner you use before people know you. It also sets the whole house system, which is why a birth time matters. Someone with a Pisces Sun and an Aries rising leads with speed and certainty and keeps the softness behind glass. Sun and rising combinations are covered pair by pair.

4. How you think, love and act: Mercury, Venus, Mars

Mercury is how your mind moves and how you speak: fast and first in Aries, thorough and slow in Taurus. Venus is what you find attractive and how you show affection. Mars is how you want, fight and assert. These three sit close to the Sun in the sky, so they are often in neighbouring signs, and the differences between them explain a lot: a Venus in Aries with a Moon in Aquarius wants immediately and needs distance, and both are true at once.

5. Where the tension is: the aspects

Aspects are the angles between planets, and they are where a chart stops being a list of signs and becomes a person. A square, ninety degrees, is friction that produces effort; a trine, a hundred and twenty, is ease that can turn into complacency; an opposition, a hundred and eighty, is a pull between two things you need. The tightest aspects, within a degree or two, dominate. In our example reading, a Sun in Pisces square Mars in Gemini is the whole story of someone who reacts before she knows what she feels, and a Jupiter opposite Saturn at two tenths of a degree is why her projects go quiet. You have angles like that too; the question is which.

6. Where it plays out: the houses

The twelve houses are areas of life: self, money, communication, home, creativity, work, partnership, shared resources, belief, career, community, the inner life. A planet’s house says where its business gets done. Venus in the tenth loves through work and reputation; Venus in the fourth through home and family. Houses need a birth time; without one, the rest of the chart still holds.

What a birth chart cannot tell you

It cannot tell you what will happen, when, or with whom. It cannot tell you whether a specific person loves you, whether to take the job, or what you will die of. Astrology describes character and the timing of themes; anyone selling you dates is selling you something else. It also cannot correct a wrong birth time, so if your chart does not feel like you, check the time first: the rising sign is the usual culprit.

Questions, answered

Can my birth chart tell my future?

No. The natal chart is fixed at birth and describes character, needs and tensions. Transits to it describe the timing of themes. Neither predicts specific events, and we do not write predictions.

Which part of my chart matters most?

The Sun, Moon and rising sign, then the tightest aspects. A chart with one exact aspect between the Sun and Saturn is shaped by it more than by any sign placement.

Why doesn’t my chart feel like me?

Usually one of two things: you are reading a Sun-sign description, which is one placement out of eleven, or the birth time is wrong and the rising sign and houses are off. Compute the full chart with the best time you have and read the Moon and aspects before deciding.

Does my birth chart change?

Never. The natal chart is the sky at your birth. What changes is the current sky, the transits, which is what a personal horoscope reads against it.
