February 29 zodiac sign: Pisces, second decan

If you were born on February 29, your sign is Pisces, the water sign ruled by Neptune: the Sun is in Pisces on this date in every year from 1980 to 2030. The Sun sits about 10° into Pisces on this date, in the second decan, where Pisces's core takes on a Jupiter flavour. Here's what the date fixes, and what only your birth time can tell you.

Your sign: Pisces

The mutable water sign that dissolves boundaries and feels what others don't even notice.

A Pisces Sun is built around empathy and imagination. You feel things that haven't been said. You read the room, the energy, the unspoken — and you're often right. This intuition is real, and it makes you formidable in any creative or healing field that rewards seeing what's beneath the surface.

The date fixes the Sun; the hour fixes the rest. A Pisces born February 29 around sunrise has Pisces rising, and a different first impression from one born at dawn. Your rising sign needs the birth time; the twelve Pisces Sun combinations show what each one changes.

The Moon on February 29, 1980–2030

Across the 13 leap years from 1980 to 2028, the Moon at noon UTC on February 29 was most often in Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, and Capricorn (2 years each) and never in Virgo, Libra or Pisces. Unlike the Sun, the Moon sign depends on the birth year. On February 29, 2028, the Moon moves from Aries into Taurus at 21:42 UTC.

In 9 of those 13 years (69%) the Moon changed sign during February 29 itself, so in those years the birth time decides the Moon as well as the rising sign. Cells with an arrow mark them, with the UTC time of the change. The Moon was never exactly full or new on February 29 between 1980 and 2030.

Find your birth year. One sign means the Moon spent the whole UTC day there; an arrow means it changed sign that day, at the UTC time shown: born before it, the first sign; after it, the second. The Moon sign calculator settles it in seconds; your birth chart adds the rising sign and houses.

Times in UTC: a birth late in the evening in the Americas, or early in the morning in Asia, can fall on the neighbouring UTC date.

Your decan: the second decan of Pisces

Each sign is divided into three 10° decans, and each decan has a sub-ruler that shades the sign's core. Degrees 10–20 of Pisces belong to Jupiter: where you grow, where you find meaning, and where life tends to be generous to you. Read it as Pisces with a Jupiter accent — the water core is unchanged, the emphasis moves.

February 29 sits on a decan boundary: in 13 of the 13 leap years from 1980 to 2030 the Sun spends part or all of the day (UTC) in the first decan of Pisces (0°–10°), sub-ruled by Saturn. Which one is yours depends on your birth year and time; a birth chart gives the exact degree.

What the date can't tell you

The Sun is one placement out of ten. Your Moon sign changes every two to three days, so Pisceans born on February 29 in different years have different Moons; your rising sign changes every two hours and needs a birth time and place. Those two carry most of what people mean by "personality" in a chart.
