Uranus is the planet of revolution, originality, and sudden change. Where Saturn builds, Uranus breaks. In a natal chart, Uranus shows where you depart from convention, where you have flashes of original insight, and where life is likely to surprise you with sudden disruption — usually in service of growth you wouldn't have chosen on your own. Uranus stays in each sign for about seven years, so its sign is more generational than personal.

Uranus's house placement is the more personal indicator. Uranus in your 1st house makes you visibly unconventional — people sense your originality before they sense anything else. Uranus in the 7th means unconventional partnerships, sudden meetings, and a need for freedom in love. Uranus in the 10th, an unusual career path, often non-traditional or technology-driven. Uranus in the 4th, an unconventional home life or sudden moves.

Uranus's aspects to personal planets are where the originality really shows. Uranus-Mercury gives a flash of genius mind; Uranus-Venus, unconventional love; Uranus-Mars, sudden bursts of action and disruption; Uranus-Sun, an unusual identity or life path that defies expectations.

Uranus transits are famous for being disruptive — sudden awakenings, breakups, career pivots, geographic moves. The classic "Uranus opposition" around ages 38-44 is a major turning point for many people: a midlife reckoning that often involves significant changes. Uranus's job is to wake you up to what's actually true, even when (especially when) the waking up is uncomfortable.

The shadow of Uranus is rebellion for its own sake — change without purpose, or detachment that becomes coldness.

Uranus retrograde

Retrograde

Uranus is retrograde for about five months of each year — it spends roughly 40% of its time retrograde, which is high. Natally, Uranus retrograde isn't unusual or particularly remarkable. It tends to internalise the Uranian energy: rebellion expressed inwardly through radical original thinking rather than outwardly through visible disruption.
