Jupiter is the planet of expansion. It governs growth, wisdom, optimism, and the search for meaning. In a natal chart, Jupiter shows where you tend to expand — physically, intellectually, spiritually — and where life tends to be generous to you. Astrologers call Jupiter the "greater benefic" because of how often its presence in a chart correlates with luck, abundance, and breadth of experience.

Jupiter's sign describes how you seek meaning and where you naturally expand. Jupiter in Aries expands through bold action and courage; Jupiter in Taurus through pleasure and embodiment; Jupiter in Gemini through ideas and conversation; Jupiter in Sagittarius (its home) through philosophy, travel, and big-picture thinking. Jupiter is in dignity in Sagittarius and in Pisces — it's most freely itself in those signs.

Jupiter's house placement shows the area of life where you find meaning, where you take risks, and where you're most likely to be lucky. Jupiter in the 9th (its natural house) brings travel, education, and philosophy; Jupiter in the 2nd, financial generosity (often with both having and giving); Jupiter in the 7th, lucky partnerships.

Jupiter's aspects shape its expression. Jupiter-Sun adds optimism and self-confidence (and sometimes inflation). Jupiter-Moon makes for a generous emotional nature. Jupiter-Saturn creates tension between expansion and limitation that resolves into mature wisdom. Jupiter-Mars adds bold action; Jupiter-Venus, generous love.

The shadow side of Jupiter is excess: too much expansion becomes inflation, overconfidence, or sprawl. Jupiter promises growth but doesn't always know when to stop. Saturn provides the discipline to channel Jupiter's gifts.

Jupiter retrograde

Retrograde

Jupiter goes retrograde about every 13 months for around four months. Natally, Jupiter retrograde often means your sense of meaning, philosophy, and growth comes from inside rather than from external systems. You may distrust formal religion or conventional wisdom and prefer to develop your own understanding through direct experience. The luck and abundance still operate, but often through more inward channels — your own depth and learning rather than external windfalls.
